From the Collection:

The Historical Photograph Collection is largely comprised of materials created by or for the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association. Some of the earliest photographs of the estate were created and sold to visitors by the Association as a means of income. Those efforts helped to establish an important collection of 19th century views. The collection spans the 1850s to 2000s and includes over 140 linear feet of analog material providing a visual history of the Mansion, outbuildings, tombs, grounds, events, visitors, collection objects, personnel, and changes throughout the estate.

Black and white photographic print of U.S. Attorney General Thomas Clark with members of The American Legion as they prepare to lay a wreath at Washington's tomb in honor of the first president's birthday. A typed caption on the reverse reads: (American Legion News Service) - Attorney General Tom C. Clark led The American Legion's nationwide observance of the 216th birthday of George Washington by placing a wreath in the name of the Legion's national commander at the tomb of the First President at Mount Vernon. Shown above before the tomb are: (left to right) Owen C. Holleran, department commander of The American Legion of D.C.; Eugene W.
