Delegates of the Republic of Liberia Centennial Commission at Bushrod Washington's Memorial at Mount Vernon, November 26, 1946
Scope and Contents
The Historical Photograph Collection is largely comprised of materials created by or for the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association. Some of the earliest photographs of the estate were created and sold to visitors by the Association as a means of income. Those efforts helped to establish an important collection of 19th century views. The collection spans the 1850s to 2000s and includes over 140 linear feet of analog material providing a visual history of the Mansion, outbuildings, tombs, grounds, events, visitors, collection objects, personnel, and changes throughout the estate.

Physical Description
Black and white photographic print of delegates of the Republic of Liberia Centennial Commission gathered around to place a wreath at the obelisk memorial to Bushrod Washington next to the tomb at Mount Vernon. It was the anniversary of the death of Bushrod Washington, and their pilgrimage commemorated the fact that Bushrod was the first president of the American Colonization Society, whose proteges founded Liberia. Mount Vernon's Resident Superintendent Charles C. Wall stands at far left. The photographer's stamp on the reverse reads: Please credit Turner, Jr. Specialized Photographer, U. S. and Foreign Distribution, 1934 - 11th St. N. W., Washington 1, D. C., U.S.A.
