From the Collection:

The Historical Photograph Collection is largely comprised of materials created by or for the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association. Some of the earliest photographs of the estate were created and sold to visitors by the Association as a means of income. Those efforts helped to establish an important collection of 19th century views. The collection spans the 1850s to 2000s and includes over 140 linear feet of analog material providing a visual history of the Mansion, outbuildings, tombs, grounds, events, visitors, collection objects, personnel, and changes throughout the estate.

Physical Description

Black and white photographic print of the Prince of Wales planting a tree (English Yew) at Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon's Resident Superintendent stands at far left, Charles Simms guard at the tomb (African American man) stands nearby. The Prince is bent over digging and is assisted by a crouched member of his party. The photograph has been adhered to a cardboard mount. A handwritten caption reads: 'Prince of Wales planting tree at Mount Vernon - Note Marines (extreme right) standing at "present arms" - and indicating spacious area reserved around tomb for the Prince and his escort - (see old Charles' bored expression). Note: Photograph must not be syndicated, rented, or loaned, or used or advertising purposes.'
