Physical Description

Stereoscopic view of Washinton's tomb at Mount Vernon. Stereograph shows wooden plank walkway, two obelisks and several people. A man looks into the vault and an African American woman stands next to him. A young African American boy leans against the metal railing surrounding one of the obelisks. Photograph likely taken in 1858 - see glass negative [R-221 ; EV-1007d] which includes the same man and young boy. Rice immigrates to the U.S. (from Nova Scotia) and arrives in D. C. in 1861 so stereograph was published at a later date. Mounted on yellow board. A label affixed to the back of the cardboard mount includes a handwritten title 'Tomb of Washington' with the remainder of the label preprinted with - Rice's Stereoscopic Views In and Around the Captiol. Published by M. P. Rice, Stereoscopic Emporium, No. 520 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington D. C.
